Pecos National Monument

Many of you know that I have traveled quite a bit, and I have a particular penchant for road trips. In fact, my best friend has joked that my nickname should be "Roadtrip". He laughs that he doesn't have to tell me where he is going before I agree to take a ride somewhere with him. Therefore, it is especially satisfying to me when my children react with such enthusiasm and awe when we see something new together on this trip.

In this photo you see Avery and Erin running ahead of us at Pecos National Monument. What you can't hear is Avery stopping every so often to exclaim, "Cool! Dad, look at that!". We were walking along a .5 mile loop that takes you up to the top of a bluff and through the ruins of an ancient indian pueblo. Along the trail are all kinds of cacti and flowers. The cacti are all in bloom, and these flowers were very impressive to Avery and Erin both.

Later in the day Avery said to her Mom, "Traveling is really fun, Mom. You get to see a lot of stuff." That was the highlight of the trip for me. And for those that may have worried about us taking such a long trip with the girls...they have been wonderful. We haven't watched a single movie while driving. Instead, they have played games, colored in their coloring books, looked for license plates with me, and read books about each of the states we've seen. The coolest thing is they are having so much fun that they don't even realize how much they are learning along the way.
